Richmond, VA – Local artists Sone Seere’ Burrell and David Marion lent their talent to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) by creating paintings during a live demonstration at Richmond Symphony’s Big Tent Event at Abner Clay Park on May 27. The Big Tent was the culminating event of the Children’s Book and Music Festival. The artists were given the task of creating art with music as the overlying theme. The finished art was recently revealed during June in celebration of Black Music Month.
Shakia Gullette Warren, executive director of the BHMVA said, “During the educational activities held throughout May for our annual Children’s Book and Music Festival, we were able to serve 1,000 school aged children. We are honored to collaborate with David Marion and Sone-Seere’ Burrell through this live art auction which will benefit our educational programming beyond the Big Tent Event! The month-long celebration of books and music was hosted at BHMVA in partnership with the Richmond Symphony and was presented by Dominion Energy. Students were treated to guest readers and musical performances by Richmond Symphony volunteers and the Make Music With Me Band of Richmond Jazz Society, Inc. When they returned to their schools, each child received a back sack of books for their own personal libraries.
Proceeds from the sale of the paintings will benefit BHMVA educational programs such as Kidz@122, Hands on History activities, and other efforts that provide access to children and youth in the community. Everyone is invited to bid on the art. To place a bid, visit https://event.gives/bhmvaliveart/items. The link for bidding will remain open through the month of June. The winning bids will be announced at the closing reception of BHMVA’s current pop-up exhibition that honors Black Music Month and the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop on July 1.
