Science Museum Hosts Earth Day Celebration April 22
To celebrate Earth Day, the Science Museum of Virginia is offering an activity-packed event exploring sustainability, natural resources and environmental science.
In addition to being able to explore Science Museum exhibitions and enjoy labs and demos, guests can visit community partner tables to learn about recycling, rain gardens, native trees, water pollution, carbon footprints, pollination and energy savings. The Virginia Chapter of the American Chemical Society will be onsite with two dozen stations where guests can make kelp bath salts, taste sustainable foods, explore bioluminescent algae, make seaweed masks and more.
Guests can also experience a rarely seen part of our Earth by viewing “Antarctica” in The Dome. At noon, 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., guests can discover the hostile and awe-inspiring continent at the bottom of the world on The Dome’s quarter-acre screen. April 22 marks the 40th anniversary of the first show in the Science Museum’s planetarium. To celebrate, Dome shows are included with admission during the Earth Day Celebration.
The Earth Day Celebration takes place Saturday, April 22, from noon to 5 p.m. Food trucks will be onsite from noon to 3 p.m. The Science Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Activities are designed for guests of all ages.
Going green is good for everyone! Having a concentration of environmentally focused content, resources and activities for Earth Day reminds guests that our individual sustainability efforts make a positive collective impact on our community and world.
Guests may purchase tickets on the Science Museum’s website ahead of the event, or get their tickets at Guest Services when they arrive April 22.
Reservations for The Dome feature are required, and can be made at Guest Services on the day of the event. Each showing is limited to 250 guests.
All activities are included with admission, which is $16 for adults; $13.50 for youth (ages 6–12) and seniors (ages 60 and older); and $10 for preschool-aged children (ages 3–5). Science Museum members, children under 2, educators and military get free admission with a valid ID. EBT cardholders get a discount.
