NSU professor creates survey for barbers
By Sheyla Fairley
Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA, professor Stephenie Howard is hoping for barbers to be allies in speaking out against violence and has created an online survey to hear back from them.
“Barbershops are resources in Black communities. It is where critical conversations are [happening],” said Howard. “They play an instrumental role in ending domestic violence. It is quite possible that they can be instrumental in terms of helping identify people who are engaging in some unhealthy or unsafe practices.”
According to an article, it’s all about “sharing information on what a healthy relationship looks like — those discussions often start in the barbershop.”
“We can normalize these kinds of conversations if we just keep bringing people together to have the conversations and to do the work,” added Howard.

Ross University School of Medicine and Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, FL, are forming a partnership to expand educational access for those underrepresented and wanting to get into medicine.
As stated in a release, B-CU students and alumni who meet RUSM’s program requirements will be “eligible for direct admission and scholarships to RUSM to pursue a medical degree” which will be available to them, “up to five years after graduation, and will cover tuition and housing for the first semester, and the flight to attend first semester.”
“This partnership with B-CU supports our shared goal of expanding educational access and opportunity, to ensure a pathway for potential doctors from diverse backgrounds to pursue their passion. Representation matters; diversifying the profession increases health equity and improves patient outcomes and the physician workforce is far from reflecting the patient community it serves,” said Heidi Chumley, M.D., M.B.A, dean of RUSM.
