5 Alabama HBCUs given $2.5M from National Park Service

As stated in a release, the National Park Service (NPS) will award $500,000 each to five historically Black colleges and universities in Alabama to “make updates and renovations” to their buildings.
The HBCUs in question are Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL; Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, AL; Miles College, Fairfield, AL; Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, AL; and Selma University, Selma, AL.
“For more than 180 years, historically black colleges and universities have provided high-level academics, opportunities, and community for generations of students,” said NPS director Chuck Sams. “These grants enable HBCUs to preserve the noteworthy structures that honor the past and tell the ongoing story of these historic institutions.”
Five Howard law students to spend their summer working in public interest firms around the United States

Kiana Stallworth, Nathaniel Williams, Jamieson Davids, Jamayne F. Potts and Mia Santiago from the Howard University School of Law, Washington, DC, have been selected for the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship Program.
According to an article, the program is dedicated to promoting “public interest and social justice values in the next generation of American lawyers” and provides grants to law students to work in public interest summer internships.
“I am extremely happy to have been selected as the first Justice John Paul Stevens Fellow at the Brady Center. As a fellow, I am a litigation intern working with the Brady Legal Department on a variety of topics dealing with ending gun violence across the country,” Stallworth said.

Charles Barkley to donate $1M to Spelman College

NBA legend Charles Barkley is donating $1 million to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. This will mark his sixth donation to an HBCU as he has previously gifted $1 million each to Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, AL; Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL; Miles College, Fairfield, AL; Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College — both located in Atlanta, GA.
Barkley contributed to Spelman after seeing the positive impact the school has had on incoming sophomore Jordyn Hudson, the daughter of his friend and business partner John Hudson.
“John has been a great mentor, a great friend, and a great business partner,” Barkley explained. “I was ready to do another HBCU and with his daughter doing great things at Spelman, so I told him, ‘Why not there?'”

North Carolina A&T and UNC awarded $2.3M to study how to improve pregnancy outcomes

As stated in a release, researchers at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, have been awarded “a four-year, $2.3 million grant from the American Heart Association to study ways to improve outcomes among women who are more likely to experience pregnancy complications because of poor heart health.”
The project, Building Equitable Linkages with Interprofessional Education Valuing Everyone (BELIEVE), will “assess gaps in current practice, create a curriculum to address them, and implement the curriculum across a network of hospital and community providers.”
“The overarching goal of our work is to transform perinatal and reproductive health services so that each mother, birthing person, and health team member is seen, heard and valued,” said Janiya Mitnaul Williams, director of the Human Lactation Program at N.C. A&T.
E&J Brandy and TBT to launch internship program for HBCU students and alumni

The Basketball Tournament (TBT), the $1 million, winner-take-all summer tournament, will be launching a paid HBCU internship with E&J Brandy, one of the most popular American brandies, as part of the renewal of their partnership.
According to an article, the internship will be for “two HBCU students or recent graduates to join TBT’s staff for the 2023 event to gain experience in the fields of business, sports management, marketing, or journalism.”
Applicants must submit a résumé and a video answering a series of prompts at EJTBT.com, which will be accepted until August 31, 2022.
“We are excited to call E&J Brandy a partner for a third consecutive year,” said TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “They continue to find creative ways to celebrate the uniqueness of TBT. We’re especially excited they will be supporting the HBCUnited team at Rucker Park in addition to awarding $10,000 to whichever team has the most creative post-game bracket celebration during this year’s event.”
