VUU receives award recognition on two of its films

As stated in a release, Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA, was announced to have received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, two Silver Telly Awards, and an Emmy nomination for its “work in social, video, and television production of two films, Virginia Union University Vision and the Community Leaders Celebration to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
“We are excited about VUU’s award recognition by our colleagues in multimedia. But, more importantly, it is a chance to share VUU with a broader audience,” said Brian Bullock, VUU’s Senior Producer and Videographer. “We have an amazing history, and today’s work builds on that rich legacy. Our production team is looking forward to sharing more of VUU’s story.”
HBCU National Center selects N.C. A&T student for summer program

Sydney Ross, a rising senior at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC, has been selected by the HBCU National Center to participate in its Class of Summer 2022 cohort.
According to an article, Ross will intern in Washington, DC with 10 other students from historically Black colleges and universities with “the Black-owned network launched by renowned journalist and commentator Roland S. Martin.”
“I am so happy to announce that I have accepted a [10-week] internship this summer with Roland Martin and Black Star Media Inc. in Washington, D.C.,” Ross said. “All praises to God for continuous blessings. I want to extend a SPECIAL thank you to David Squires for connecting [me] with Roland and helping to set up this amazing opportunity.”

Jermaine Woods selected as head coach of the Coppin State women’s basketball program

Jermaine Woods has been announced as head coach of the Coppin State University, Baltimore, MD, women’s basketball program after serving two seasons as the team’s associate head coach.
“I am beyond thrilled for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Coppin State University Women’s Basketball team,” Woods said in a release. “I am grateful and would like to thank President Dr. Anthony Jenkins and [athletic director] Mr. Derek Carter for entrusting me with our amazing student athletes. My goal is to cultivate a culture that produces great people, exceptional students, and championship athletes. We will continue to build a program that represents the vision of our University and athletic department.”
FOSSI to support students pursuing careers in STEM at historically Black colleges & universities

According to an article, the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) was launched in 2020 and has “raised more than $17 million to fund $40,000 scholarships for over 350 students” attending HBCUs.
The program was created to support “students from underrepresented communities pursuing studies in a range of preferred science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, including chemical and mechanical engineering, chemistry, and environmental sciences.”
During its first year, FOSSI provided 151 scholarships and will fund an additional 144 scholarships this fall. The program aims to provide 1,000 scholarships through 2025.
Applications for the 2023 FOSSI program will open on September 23.

VSU offers summer courses for K–12 students

Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA, will be offering educational options for students from kindergarten through 12th grade during summer 2022.
According to an article, the VSU Summer Camp Series will offer “fun educational and interactive experiences in varying fields including STEAM, robotics, college preparation, research, leadership, preparation for primary school, etc.”
“With local schools approaching summer break, our community parents need a safe, educational environment for their children,” said Dr. Shandra Claiborne, VSU Executive Director for Camps. “Academics is the cornerstone of planning for Virginia State. The summer camps will provide a rich cultural environment where students receive an outstanding support system that is educational, family oriented and results driven.”
