How long have you been playing basketball?
About 11 years now.
How did you get started playing?
I had a guidance counsellor that saw potential in me and I started getting in doing Petersburg Rec basketball.
What is your favorite thing about the sport?
I love being a leader for my team. I love winning and being competitive.
What is your least favorite thing, or the biggest challenge for you?
My least favorite thing is losing. I don’t like to lose, but I know that comes with the game sometimes.
You’ve been playing the game for a long time. What would you say has been your proudest moment?
My proudest moment would be making it to States this year with my team. We didn’t win it, but we went all the way until we had two more games to the championship. We lost by one point.
What are you most grateful for?
My mother because she pushes me to go harder everyday in whatever I do. If I’m working on a math problem or playing basketball and I want to give up, she’ll push me to go harder, keep playing, keep working.
How are you coping with school being shut down?
I’ve been doing the work they’ve put on Google classroom so my mind can stay focused, and I’ve been doing workouts for basketball. I’m just trying to stay focused.
Do you plan on going to college?
Yes, ma’am.
Have you already received an acceptance or do you have somewhere in mind you’d like to attend?
Not right now, but I have put in for Norfolk State and Old Dominion.
Would you like to keep playing basketball in college?
Yes, ma’am.
What are you planning on studying? What are your career goals?
I want to go to school for business management. I want to have my own business.
What sort of business would you like to have?
Fashion. I love dressing.
You want to be a designer?
Yes, ma’am.
What type of clothing do you design?
All kinds – pants, shoes, shirts, hats.
Are your designs more toward dress wear, sports wear or a mix of styles?
I do a mix of everything.
What community service work have you been involved in?
With the basketball program, we’ve helped out with basketball camps. We’ve also gone through the church and they’ve had us help to fix stuff and things like that.
Who or what inspires you?
My mother.
What advice would you give others?
Don’t give up. Keep pushing. It may not seem like your dream is happening right now, but if you keep working and go harder every day, keep your mindset focused on what you want to do – you can do it.
