SisterFund has announced they are accepting grant applications for Fall 2018 and will award $40,000 to this year’s grant recipient.
A giving circle within The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia (TCF), SisterFund is the only women’s circle comprised of all black women. Its grants are presented to nonprofit organizations that offer programs and services that promote education, empowerment, health, leadership development and support, and workforce development and support to Black women and girls in the region. Focused on the residents of the City of Richmond, and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico, members contribute a minimum of $1,100 to participate in an investment pool to be awarded to a nonprofit selected through a competitive application process.
In this third year of giving, the grant is double the amount that has been awarded in previous years. In 2016, SisterFund awarded $20,000 to The Possibilities Project, a collaborative effort between Children’s Home Society of VA and Better Housing Coalition. Funds were used to provide trauma-informed supports including access to education, safe housing and life coaching to young women aging out of the foster care system. Last year, a $20,000 grant was awarded to Partnership for the Future to provide training, enrichment and mentoring for 179 high school girls and college women working to attain college degrees.
The increase in grant amount reflects SisterFund membership growth as enthusiasm, infrastructure and capacity also have grown since its 2015 inception. “It’s an exciting time,” said Veronica Fleming, Founding member, President of SisterFund and the Executive Director for Partnership for Families. “Our girls deserve more and we will continue to work and grow to support women and prepare the next generation of leaders. More resources for our partners, means greater impact for our region.” The organization builds its membership annually and relies on the donations of individuals to sustain its grantmaking focused on women and girls in its service area.
