Bank of America reportedly eliminated free checking for eBanking customers with low income balances. There was no fee as long as customers didn’t use a bank teller for routine transactions and agreed to receive their statements online. The customers will now be charged a $12 monthly fee unless the customer has a monthly direct deposit of $250 or more or a minimum daily balance of $1,500. A petition has been launched with more than 45,000 signers arguing that the new bank requirements are beyond the financial reach of customers with low income.
What’s your take? Do you think this is discriminatory or business as usual?
