The relevance of Black History Month and how we celebrate our achievements and prepare for the future comes into question every February. Dr. Carter G. Woodson proclaimed the second week of February to be Negro History Week back in 1926, honoring the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Dr. Woodson stated that “We should emphasize not Negro history, but the Negro in history.” We recognize African American History Month as a moment to reflect upon how far we have come as a nation, and what challenges remain.
