Fisk University announces former NBA player Grant Hill as spring commencement speaker

NBA legend, team owner, author, and broadcaster Grant Hill has been announced as the spring 2023 commencement speaker at Fisk University, Nashville, TN.
According to an article, Hill’s incredible “19-year playing career” and contributions to “charity work, academic scholarships, and national initiatives for healthier lifestyles” that demonstrated his “servant heart” has “profoundly aligned with Fisk’s unprecedented legacy of social justice and dedication to a better future.”
“Fisk’s contributions to the fabric of American life are unparalleled and the future looks exciting,” said Hill. “I look forward to meeting the outstanding students and am honored to serve as this year’s commencement speaker.”

Morgan State to receive $6.8M in state funds to launch two new research centers

According to an article, Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD, will receive $6.8 million in state funding to launch two new research centers, one of which will drive “innovation in the design and manufacturing of semiconductors, while the other will focus on mitigating the challenges facing public schools.”
The first research center, Morgan’s Center for Research and Education in Microelectronics, will “focus on training and workforce development in semiconductor manufacturing, preparing students to become the industry’s next generation of professionals” and will be housed in the School of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The second, the National Center for the Elimination of Education Disparities (NCEED), will “study the needs of underserved communities and create solutions to underachievement, low attendance rates, high drop-out rates, and inadequate preparation for college and career” and will be housed in the School of Education and Urban Studies (SEUS).

Spelman College partners with Global Ocean nonprofit OceanX

As stated in a release, a partnership between Spelman College, Atlanta, GA, and Global ocean exploration nonprofit, OceanX, was recently formed to increase diversity in STEM by offering “students an in-depth experience with ocean exploration and marine science and operations.”
This partnership strives to “bridge existing gaps in the marine sciences by equipping Spelman students and faculty with resources and opportunities across four core areas: OceanX’s Young Explorers program, employment opportunities, research and curriculum development, and partnership building.”
“The Spelman partnership will address this equity gap head-on by offering women of color direct opportunities in the STEM workforce through OceanX’s visionary programming,” explained Mattie Rodrigue, OceanX science program director.
N.C. A&T student creates brand to spread positivity

In 2022, North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, bioengineering senior Emmett “Avery” Woods-Gresham created his brand, Yea Shawty Co., as a way to promote positive energy.
“My brand revolves around clothing, content creation and most importantly, community service,” Woods-Gresham said in a release. “I’m all about spreading positivity, and I find that community service is a very effective way to do that.”
“Since attending this school, I genuinely believe I can take my brand to the next level. I’ve received so much support from my friends and my classmates. The HBCU love is like no other,” expressed Woods-Gresham, crediting his growth to his time at N.C A&T.
Pensole Lewis College partners with Logitech to outfit PLC students with latest tech for their education

According to an article, Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design, Detroit, MI, and Logitech, a tech company, have entered a partnership where Logitech will “donate a variety of advanced technology tools to further design creatives at PLC, including mice, keyboards, headsets, streaming cameras and more, as well as assist in co-creating spaces for students to ideate and collaborate” and PLC will work with Logitech to develop “a joint design curriculum aimed at giving students the opportunity to enhance their skills and creativity, while improving and honing their current design skills.”
“This partnership is an investment into a new generation of designers and design education so together we can take great strides supporting a diversity of talent and backgrounds that will benefit the design industry, making our future and the products and experiences we create more inclusive and sustainable,” said Alastair Curtis, chief design officer at Logitech.
